Fears and Phobias

Fear is the inherent reaction we experience in response to danger.  It activates our ‘fight or flight’ response which instantly prepares our bodies and minds to either defend ourselves, or escape the situation.

When we were children we were predominantly fearless but, as we grew, we learned that there are things that threaten our safety.  So it is essential to our survival that we experience fear in dangerous situations.  Sometimes however, fears are passed down from our parents (or other adults) such as seeing your mother terrified at the sight of a harmless spider. These experiences can be more debilitating than those we learn from personal experiences.  Because, if those fears are irrational (like the spider) and we take them on board, we end up being scared of something without knowing why.  The other reason we may not know the cause of our fear is that an incident (usually in childhood) caused so much trauma that it was repressed, or hidden away, by our subconscious mind as a protective mechanism.

When we know what caused our fear we can, more easily, rationalize our responses.
But when we don’t understand why we react the way we do, we feel helpless and out of control.  Clients will often say that nothing caused their phobia “it just started”. But that is not true.  For every effect there is a cause and it is the therapist’s job to help you uncover the origin and remove its effects.

Phobias create an intense and uncontrollable fear that produces physical and hysterical symptoms which overwhelm the sufferer.  Faced with these imagined or exaggerated threats, victims will go to great lengths to avoid the feared situations. This can severely disrupt their lives and have an adverse effect on their families.

"We spent about 2-2½ hours in the tower (CN Tower, Toronto) and overall I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was quite happy and content with the height. Thanks for your help."
BS, Cannock (fear of heights)

"I originally went to see Helen, following recommendations from others, to ask whether she could help me with my fear of blood tests and hospitals as I had found out I was pregnant. The thought of having blood tests and going to hospital really freaked me out due to my past history with hospitals.

Helen was fantastic! She was available straight away and helped me cope with all the tests I received throughout the pregnancy and labour. I was able to be more confident, less frightened and able to deal with the unexpected.

I found Helen to be supportive, friendly and very keen to ensure I was relaxed. I would highly recommend Helen to anyone who has a fear of some sort! Thank you for everything."
DPD, Birmingham (fear of blood tests and hospitals)

"It was my dream to be able to fly without apprehension. With your help, I did exactly that and I still can’t believe it!! A very big thank you."
